Viral Video Lundi: My Favorite 2015 Super Bowl Commercials

Somehow or another my VVV did not post on Friday, so here it is just a tad late...

We were that super lame married couple who stayed home and watched the Super Bowl in our pajamas. Were we invited to a Super Bowl party? You bet! Were we too tired from one night of going out (on Friday, mind you) to make it to said party? Damn straight we were!

That's OK though, because our 2-person Super Bowl party consisted of chips and Pancho's cheese dip, pigs in a blanket (my family has always called them little weenies but apparently that is weird?), and ice-cold Cokes.

The game, as the entire world knows, was really good and surprisingly kept my attention. Katy Perry's halftime show was epic and I LOST MY MIND when Missy Elliott came in out of nowhere. My mom, on the other hand, was not as sure about good ole' Missy:

The Missy-Nelliott tour ft. Missy and Sir Nelly needs to happen ASAP

But the real reason behind this post is to recap my favorite commercials from the 2015 Super Bowl. Enjoy!

1. Coca-Cola: #MakeItHappy

2. Nationwide: Invisible

3. Avocados from Mexico: #FirstDraftEver

4. Budweiser: Best Buds

5. Fiat: The Blue Pill

Until next year, Super Bowl!

Granny's St. Agnes Academy Hall of Fame Induction: Go, Granny, Go!

I am flying back to Memphis after work today for a very special celebration: my grandmother, Mary Donahue Jorgensen, is being inducted into the St. Agnes Academy Hall of Fame! Our family is so excited to come together and celebrate our wonderful, loving matriarch and all of her many accomplishments!

When I was finalizing Granny's nomination, there were some events in her life that I knew bits and pieces about, but which needed more detail and umph. My mom couldn't remember the facts either, so I called up Granny and told her a little white lie - that I was writing a blog post about each member of our family and that she was the first one up! She bought it hook, line, and sinker, and the rest is history...

My grandmother is an amazing woman, and going through this process has shown me how important it is to take a step back and reflect on the powerful things that those around you have accomplished, and to sing their praises from the mountaintops - they deserve it!

So, in honor of my grandmother and her beautiful, inspirational life, I present to you her nomination:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Selfless. Loving. Devoted. Giving. Prayerful.

These are some of the many adjectives that beautifully describe my grandmother, Mary Donahue Jorgensen, St. Agnes Academy class of 1953. When I think of the women in my life who I should strive to emulate, my grandmother is at the top of my list.  I know that she will humbly disagree, but there is no one more deserving to be inducted into the St. Agnes Academy Hall of Fame.

My grandmother, “Granny” to her 13 grandchildren, has exemplified the Dominican pillars and the standards of St. Agnes from an early age. After her father’s passing at the age of 14, she was so fortunately offered a scholarship to attend St. Agnes and bravely juggled school, work, and taking care of her three younger brothers. One of my favorite pictures is one that you can find in the St. Agnes archives, and it depicts my grandmother at the blessing of the statue of St. Agnes, which her senior class raised funds for and purchased from Italy as their senior gift. My grandmother’s kindness towards her classmates even led to her induction into the 1953 Hall of Fame, where she was voted “Sweetest.” She was also awarded the “Babe Ruth Award” during her senior year at St. Agnes.

Prayer: After high school, my Granny married my grandfather (“Paw Paw”), and the two of them have served as a true example of a Godly couple for the past 57 years. She was one of the charter members of St. Louis parish, helping to raise funds for the church that has been such a blessing to them for so many years. She is extremely devoted to her parish, participating in Bible studies and faithfully volunteering each and every week in the St. Louis adoration chapel. My joining the Catholic Church at the 2013 Easter Vigil was not only a testament to the values and standards that I learned during my time at St. Agnes, but also to the faith my grandmother has imparted to me through her steadfast devotion to the Catholic faith. Though my grandmother could not travel from Memphis to Atlanta to attend the Easter Vigil due to chemotherapy sessions that left her tired and weak, I honored her by taking on the confirmation name “Louise,” her middle name.

Community/Service: My grandmother has been blessed by God with an amazing, unique gift, the ability to weave, which she has shared with both the Memphis community and those in need. She has served as the President of the Memphis Guild of Handloom Weavers two times and as the Vice President countless other times. Her biggest contribution to the Memphis Guild of Handloom Weavers is by far and away her dedication to their booth at the Pink Palace Crafts Fair. If you attend the annual Pink Palace Crafts Fair, then you have probably come across my grandmother giving weaving demonstrations on little looms to the children, passing down her love to younger generations. You may have even picked up one of her bookmarks or dog leashes that she sells out of year after year. In high school I would accompany my grandmother to the St. Jude Target House, where she would selflessly volunteer her time to conduct weaving activities with the residents. She would weave potholders with the parents (and a sprinkling of children), listen to their stories, offer a hug and a kind word, and provide the residents with a fun activity that took their minds off of the more serious events occurring in their lives. She also spends countless (wo)man-hours weaving beautiful baby blankets, which she donates to Birthright International. A few years ago, my grandmother wove 19 scarves for participants in the Memphis Teacher Residency, a faith-based organization that supports college graduates interested in teaching in low-income Memphis neighborhoods. I have seen firsthand how my grandmother’s artistic talents have brought smiles to the recipients of her wares who are deeply appreciative of the loving time and effort that she puts into each and every piece.

Study: Given the year that my grandmother graduated from St. Agnes, it was not very common for females to attend college. She married my grandfather and raised six wonderful children, but her intellectual curiosity was never put on the back burner despite her full time job being that of a devoted wife and mother. In the early 1990s she attended the Memphis College of Art, taking classes on fiberarts to further her knowledge of weaving. She even flew to England while in her mid-70s and took classes pertaining to English quilt and tapestry making. You think St. Agnes is an Apple-savvy school? You should meet my grandmother! She learned how to sync her five-foot loom to her Apple computer, using software to help construct weaving patterns and warp the loom so that she could get to work on her next masterpiece. She had an iPhone THREE years before me, taking full advantage of the Apple genius bar so that she could utilize everything that her iPhone had to offer. Seriously, this is one hip Granny who does not let anything stand in the way of her learning something new and bettering herself.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Though my grandmother lives in Memphis and I am now living in Atlanta, I have a piece of her with me every single day: her St. Agnes Academy class ring from 1953. This ring is my most prized possession, and it honestly should not even be here today. My aunt Carole received this ring when she attended St. Agnes, and she passed it along to me my sophomore year, a full year before my Ring Ceremony. She had come across it in her jewelry box and brought it to me at our family Easter celebration the following Sunday. A week after this celebration, my aunt’s house burned to the ground and took everything with it. God had bigger plans for this ring and knew that it needed to get to me. I wear this ring every single day as a reminder of my grandmother and the love, faith, and servitude that she has always shown to me, my family, her church, and her community, which, I have no doubt, were instilled in her through her time at St. Agnes.

Marge the Party Barge Visits Atlanta

This past weekend was quite busy - my W&L friend Molly (aka Marge the Party Barge) came down to visit and attend the annual W&L Atlanta Alumni Chapter's Lee Party with us. Molly arrived on Thursday night, so we relaxed at home with a charcuterie spread, wine, and Shondaland Thursday (so basic). Speaking of Shondaland, what in the hell was going on with that episode of Scandal?! I am going to have to re-watch the winter premiere because the episode format (and maybe the wine) thoroughly threw me off of my Scandal watching game.

I had to work on Friday, so Molly took a day trip to the High Museum of Art before we reconvened and got ready for the party.

The Lee Party is held each year at an alumni's beautiful, magazine-perfect house in Buckhead. The party is always tastefully done, and this year was no exception. You are greeted with W&L-tricked-out-golfcarts whisking guests up to the house, and a Trident flag proudly greets you as you ascend the walkway.

There is no shortage of food and drink at this party: three open bars, BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches, a shrimp and grits bar, and a raw oyster bar just to name a few. At parties like this you run the risk of never consuming a bite of food as you catch up with other alums and hit the bar a little too frequently. Luckily for me, this year I 1) Ate food and 2) Did not have to work the next day (goodbye busy season!). Score one for me.

We had a great time at the party and called it a night around 12:30, which is funny since the invitation had an end time of 10:30. You just can't end a 400-person W&L gathering that easily...

It was in everyone's best interest to sleep in on Saturday and get a late start to the day. We met some of Molly's family who lives in the area for lunch at the classic Antico Pizza. We were fortunate that the line was short and that a table opened up for us to snag. After lunch, Molly and I headed to SweetWater Brewing Company for their Saturday tasting.

It was a pleasant day outside, so the brewery was packed. Molly gets a gold star because she tried a new beer with each of her tasting tickets. I, on the other hand, stuck with my faves: the IPA, 420, and Hop Hash. If you ever come and visit Atlanta, you must swing by SweetWater!

One quick fashion note - there were no less than 15 girls walking around SweetWater wearing floppy hats. Is this a thing now? We kept seeing girls strut up to the brewery dressed to the nines. We were just glad that we made it there dressed in anything besides yoga pants and t-shirts. Oh to be young again...

We engaged in a little pre-dinner Dance Moms (haters gonna hate), and then it was off to Taqueria del Sol for dinner. FYI if you come and visit then I will be taking you here for at least one meal.

We decided to close out Molly's visit with a trip to the World of Coca-Cola! If you don't leave this museum feeling happy, then something must be wrong with you. Oh, and our welcome-guide's name was Felicia! We thoroughly enjoyed saying "Bye, Felicia!" for the rest of our visit.

Here's a little happiness for you, the reader, inspired by our trip to the World of Coca-Cola! Happy Wednesday!

Viral Video Vendredi: Katy Perry and Super Bowl Commercials

As most everyone knows, this Sunday is the big day - Super Bowl Sunday. Like most girls, I have no real interest in watching the actual game, but rather am more interested in Katy Perry's halftime show and the overhyped Super Bowl commercials.

I'll admit that I am a Katy Perry apologist. Her songs are catchy and her concerts transport you to a kooky world filled with colors and lights, yet I find myself  trying to justify myself to other people on why I like her music - I just like it ok! Here is a crappy-quality video of Katy Perry singing Roar when she brought her Prismatic tour to Atlanta last summer. I was fortunate enough to capitalize on the suite tickets gifted to me by my old company prior to my departure, and Lord if I didn't enjoy every single moment of that concert!

The Taylor Swift-Katy Perry feud only heightens my interest in KP's upcoming performance, where she is allegedly going to call out their spat on stage. Maybe T-Swift is just pissed because Katy is back on-again with my first love, John Mayer. The claws are out!

I have high hopes for this year's Super Bowl commercials. To satisfy this anticipation, I have brought together some of my favorite past Super Bowl commercials for your viewing pleasure - enjoy!

1. Google - Parisian Love

2. Career Builder - Monkey Business

3. Budweiser - Brotherhood

4. Coca-Cola - #MakeItHappy

Be on the lookout for Coca-Cola's 2015 commercials!

Weekend Roundup: IMAX, Mice, and More Soccer

This past Friday we hit up the Fernbak Museum for its weekly Martinis and IMAX event. Apparently Matt's MBA class has an "essential ATL checklist" floating around somewhere, and if you complete all of the items before graduation then you get invited to a super secret party with all of the other list-completers. Let the games begin!

Proof that Matt attended the event. The black and white hides his most distinguishable feature, so FYI he is the one sporting that dashing white cardigan.

This event draws in a diverse crowd who are there to enjoy live music and overpriced martinis. This IMAX theater only shows documentary-style IMAX films that are about 40ish minutes in length, so don't come here expecting to get up close and personal with the latest Transformers installment. You can, however, get up close and personal with one of these bad boys:

Rawr

I hadn't seen an IMAX movie since like the fourth grade, but I am definitely on board for the boozing while watching philosophy that I can partake in as an adult. Matt enjoys it too, so much so that he proceeded to jump out of his seat during a sudden shot of an iguana and spill straight bourbon all over himself. This incident occurred roughly 10 minutes into the film, so there was a nice odor wafting through the air for the duration of the movie. (Oh yeah, we saw a film on the Galapagos Islands - very interesting!)

After the movie we headed to a bar in the Virginia Highlands neighborhood of Atlanta called Highland Tap, and this, ladies and gentlemen, is where I saw the MOUSE. Let's be clear - this is a steakhouse where people are actually consuming food. Apparently people can just come in and out of a back door as they please, and during one such instance this mouse (or rat, who knows) saw its opportunity and made a break for it inside and out of the rain. Girls screamed, guys kicked the mouse/rat back out the door, and I decided then and there that I will never return. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the mouse/rat, but I imagine it looked something like this:

On Sunday we ventured over to our local Irish pub, Fado, for Arsenal's FA Cup game. The Gunners pulled out the victory and live to play another day!

Why hello there, Theo Walcott

We are laying low this week in preparation for Marge the Party Barge's triumphant arrival in Atlanta on Thursday to celebrate the Atlanta W&L chapter's infamous Lee Party.

This weekend is going to be a full-fledged throwback to the life and times of 4 Frank Parsons Way circa 2007. Look out!
